Wells View garden comprises six acres of garden which have been created over many years, plus a meadow of 12 acres. The garden, which is part of the red leaf estate, was planted in the 18th Century by William Wells who made collections of seeds from all over the world. Many of the trees that he grew from seeds still remain today. The gardener at the time, Joseph Wells (no relative to William), became the father of HG Wells. Today the garden has many mature deciduous and coniferous trees, banks of rhododendrons, camellias and azaleas which provide a framework for more recent plantings of Spring bulbs, perennials, roses, and grasses. Lawns and mown pathways pass between the trees, shrubs and planting. There is an orchard and vegetable garden, as well as greenhouses. With its spectacular view to the west towards Chiddingstone, Hever and Chartwell, you’re invited to bring your tennis rackets or enjoy a game of croquet.
