Stepping up for the Hospice: Vivienne’s story

Vivienne, Pembury charity shop volunteer

Vivienne has been a dedicated volunteer since 2005, giving her time in our charity shops, at the Hospice in Pembury and fundraising for patients and their loved ones. This January, as she entered her 80th year, she set herself a new challenge – walking 80 miles to raise £800! Find out more below…

Fundraising for charity

“My husband, David and I got married when I was 19 and we moved to Kent when he accepted a job in London. When our children, Helen and Andy were growing up we often toured Europe by car, and we still travel extensively now. I’ve always enjoyed keeping active, too, so deciding to do a sponsored walk was the ideal way to raise money for the Hospice,” Vivienne said.

“I first set myself the challenge four years ago and raised over £1,800 for patients and their loved ones by walking 75 miles before my 75th birthday. This January, I celebrated my 79th birthday and began my 80th year, so the challenge was to walk 80 miles and raise £800!”

Vivienne continued: “I retired in the autumn of 2004 and had a great couple of months enjoying meeting up with friends and family, but I realised I wanted to be part of something more worthwhile that would help people locally, that desire was part of the reason I chose to fundraise, but it also prompted me to start volunteering.”

Volunteering journey

“I remember the beginning of my volunteering journey very vividly. It started on 20th January 2005 after I walked into a Hospice in the Weald shop in Paddock Wood and was given a warm welcome by the manager, Ginny. After a few years there, I started volunteering at the Hospice itself, enjoying working in the coffee shop in the reception area, before joining the Pembury shop, where I’m still volunteering now,” she shared.

“The manager there, Anne Elliot, is amazing – so organised, helpful, friendly and kind. Together, with another lovely volunteer, Ann, we enjoy our time welcoming and chatting with customers, encouraging purchases, tidying the shop, and sorting donations. There are about 20 volunteers during the week at the Pembury shop, all friendly and very hard-working. It’s so nice to meet up with them all on special occasions.”

“Hospice in the Weald is an amazing place, caring and helping so many local families at very sad times in their lives,” revealed Vivienne. “Hopefully, my volunteering and sponsored walking will help to support this extraordinary charity to continue its invaluable role for so many in Kent and East Sussex.”
