Shop sustainably and make a difference

Shoppers in Sevenoaks High Street Shop

Today marks the start of Sustainable Fashion Week, and with Second-hand September already underway, there’s no better month to consider updating your wardrobe with planet-friendly pieces.

Here, our community of shoppers share their thoughts on the impact of sustainable fashion, how charity shopping can make a direct difference to patients and families at Hospice in the Weald, and why Love Your Labels will be the ideal opportunity to do so on 26th September! Katie, Hospice in the Weald shopper

Katie's eco-friendly advice

“Shopping second-hand helps contribute to sustainability as it offers a new life to garments which may have otherwise been thrown away,” explained Katie, a fashion and lifestyle blogger. “So, start with getting to know charity shops that are local to you – this will not only be an eco-friendlier option, but you can find some one-of-a-kind pieces, and your money will go to a great cause!”

Samantha, best-selling author, comedian, and keen pre-loved shopper, said: “Charity shopping is an amazing way to be more sustainable and save the planet, plus, it saves you money. I’m looking forward to a good old rummage at the Love Your Labels event and finding some unique items. It’s like being an archaeologist on a dig but with less dirt… and you get to take the stuff home.”

Samantha’s sustainable shopping tips

  1. Think about the other items in your wardrobe, how does this new find sit with them and what would you pair it with?
  2. Make a wish list of pieces to help you stay focused.
  3. Donate to charity shops as well as buying from them!

“Visit your charity shop this September to raise money for good causes, grab a bargain and reduce waste that contributes to polluting the planet. Also, I’ll probably be there so say hi!” she added.

Erin at Love Your Labels

Erin's love for mindful fashion

“I love sustainable fashion; I think it saves the planet,” claimed Erin, a second-hand shopping enthusiast. “I always loved charity shopping because you can find so many good bits for good prices and I came to Love Your Labels last year as well! It raises great money for a good cause, and it’s also saving the planet as the clothes being sold are ones that people won’t use anymore.”

Susie, a veteran charity shopper, concluded: “The negative environmental impact of both textile production and consigning unwanted garments to landfill is well documented and makes for grim reading. By shopping second-hand we’re using what’s already here, saving clothes from landfill and helping the environment. I’m going to be first in line to get in there and start rummaging on 26th September! I love that my money is going to support Hospice in the Weald who will then use it to support people in need.”
