Shaping the future of Hospice Care

Investing in Care for Our Community

We’re developing plans to improve our services and facilities over the coming year, so we can continue to provide the very best care for everyone who needs us now and for years to come.

We will be refurbishing and upgrading our Hospice in Pembury. And in Five Ashes, we are looking to once again provide in-patient services at Cottage Hospice and open a brand-new centre for children and young people.

Nick Farthing, Hospice in the Weald’s Chief Executive, said: “This transformation programme will help us continue to provide the compassionate care everyone deserves as they come to the end of their life, in the best possible environment, now and in the future.

“In the short term, there will be some changes and temporary service relocations, but we are working hard to ensure transitions are as smooth as possible and will keep everyone updated throughout.

“We expect the majority of the work to be completed by next summer, and we’ll then have greater flexibility in what we offer to patients and their loved ones, an even better environment for our wonderful staff and volunteers, and be in an even stronger position to support the communities we serve and those who support us.”

A Fresh Look at Pembury

Our Hospice in Pembury opened in 1998. Now, the in-patient ward, reception area, chaplaincy and spiritual care rooms, and Living Well centre will all be given a fresh, new look, informed by feedback from patients and loved ones.

They’ll be modernised and upgraded, so they remain functional for years to come – and redesigned to provide a calm and uplifting environment. These changes will enable us to offer a greater range of support and make the building even more welcoming for all.

During the Refurbishment

While the refurbishment is underway, some of our services will be temporarily relocated. Instead of being admitted to the ward at Pembury, in-patients will be cared for at Cottage Hospice in Five Ashes. Temporary venues will also be provided for Counselling and Support and our Living Well service. These services will all return to Pembury once the refurbishment is complete.

Looking Ahead

Once the work is complete, we’ll welcome patients and their loved ones back to the newly refurbished Hospice in Pembury and continue providing in-patient services at Cottage Hospice.

We’re also planning to create a new children and young people’s centre.

We already support children with life-limiting and life-threatening conditions through home visits, outreach services and special events. To further meet the needs of families, we’re looking to redevelop a property next door to Cottage Hospice in Five Ashes – creating a place where children can take part in arts and crafts, sensory play and music.

Made Possible by Your Support

While the work will be covered by funds previously raised by the charity, as well as recent funding from government, Hospice in the Weald has highlighted the importance of ongoing fundraising support.

Nick added: “With money set aside to cover the costs of this project, every pound from our fundraising and charity shop income can continue to go where it is needed most – to deliver our services, to be there for our community, and to raise the next pound.

“This year, we need to raise £9 million to be there for everyone who needs us, which is why the continued support of our incredible community has never been more valued.”
