Since Meadow of Memories launched, the Hospice has been pleased to see supporters register their interest in donating a butterfly and attending the display. Phil is one of these people – he was immediately drawn to the butterflies as he shares a deep and personal connection with them and with his late wife, Jan.
Jan was admitted to the Hospice in March 2020. During her time with us, she formed many special bonds with those who had the honour of caring for her. She was always surrounded by family and friends, right up until the moment she died on 11th August 2020.
Phil reflected on that day: “It was rare that I was on my own with Jan, but on this particular day, I was. Things had changed, and we knew it was getting close. Two nurses who had become particularly close to Jan were called to come and say their final goodbyes.”
He recalls what the nurses told him about that moment: “They said that when they arrived at the Hospice, butterflies appeared from everywhere and prevented them from entering. They looked at each other and knew that Jan had gone. When they got to the ward, Jan had already passed away – at exactly the same time the butterflies had appeared.”
Phil takes great comfort in this moment. Jan had always loved butterflies, and now, whenever he sees one, he’s reminded of her presence. He was the very first person to make a donation to the Meadow of Memories appeal, and his generosity is deeply appreciated by everyone at the hospice.
