At Hospice in the Weald, we are lucky to have the support of volunteers across all departments and roles, including our charity shops. This Volunteers’ Week, we spoke to some of those selfless individuals to discover why they volunteer, what they enjoy about their roles, and how volunteering in our shops makes a difference. Read on to get to know them more!
At 90 years old, Ann has been volunteering for a decade, bringing joy and structure to her weeks – while helping her community.
“The best thing about volunteering is meeting people, having a chat and a laugh, giving my week a bit of structure, and feeling useful even at my age. I’m 90 and I’ve been volunteering for 10 years!
“I have so many nice memories of my time as a volunteer, but my favourites are meeting the Duke of Edinburgh youngsters and my birthday party with the team,” shared Ann.
Carole’s dedication to helping others makes her an invaluable volunteer and contributes to the care and support we provide.
“I enjoy everything about volunteering – meeting customers and chatting to them, making friends with other volunteers, and knowing that what I’m doing is directly supporting patients and their loved ones at the Hospice.
“I am an active person who has to be busy, knowing that it is helping the Hospice provide care and support makes it even better!” explained Carole.
Holly has been a dedicated volunteer for several years, and her passion for interacting with customers and colleagues shines through in everything she does. With great enthusiasm, she makes shopping a welcoming experience for all our visitors.
“I’ve been volunteering for around 8 years… I really like and enjoy dealing with the customers and the amazing people I work with,” said Holly.
If you thought about volunteering in our charity shops, or in one of our many departments at the Hospice, but haven’t yet taken the plunge, Holly has some words of encouragement:
“Hospice in the Weald is a fab place to work. To anyone considering volunteering: don’t hesitate, come and join us!”
