Christmas Comes to Hospice in the Weald for Children

On Saturday 7th December, Hospice in the Weald for Children transformed Pembury into a magical winter wonderland, bringing joy, comfort, and festive cheer to children with life-limiting and life-threatening illnesses, and their families.

The Christmas party, attended by over ten children plus family members, was a celebration carefully crafted to ensure every moment was accessible, inclusive, and unforgettable. For families who often face barriers to attending events, the occasion provided a safe, familiar space where they could relax, connect with others, and enjoy the magic of the season together.

The Hospice was alive with festive activities, from crafting Christmas tree decorations to playing in the ‘snow’ with friendly polar bears and penguins. The enchanting ‘magic carpet’—an interactive projection that responds to motion—offered endless fun and excitement for children of all abilities.

“After lots of preparation and planning, our ideas all came together on the day to make a magical winter wonderland. We really wanted to create an inclusive event. The most rewarding part was seeing the joy and reactions from the children; huge smiles, laughter, and interaction,” said Hayley Radcliffe, Children’s Support Worker, who helped plan and run the event.

No Christmas party would be complete without a visit from Santa himself, who delighted children with rides in his sleigh and the chance to capture those precious moments on camera. The building rang with laughter and the sounds of beloved Christmas songs, performed live by the Hughes family, created an atmosphere of warmth and togetherness. Fabulous decorations and balloons, created by Bespoke Balloon Creations , set the perfect backdrop.

Jess, mum of three, including Maisie who is supported by Hospice in the Weald for Children, said: “Thank you again for having us on Saturday! The kids are still talking about how much fun they had, and I am still tearing up, at how much effort went into it. I had the best day”.

Adding to the magic were entertainers from Embracing Arts, a theatre company specializing in inclusive theatrical experiences for children with special educational needs or life-limiting conditions. Using sensory play, keyword signing, lights, textures, props, and instruments, they ensured that every child could join in the festive fun.

Hospice in the Weald for Children is dedicated to helping children with life-limiting and life-threatening conditions make the most of every day with their families. Through a holistic approach, the team provides a range of tailored services, including respite care sessions at home, hospital visit support, talking therapies, memory-making, music therapy, and bereavement support.

This Christmas party is a reflection of the Hospice’s commitment to ensuring children and their families feel supported, cared for, and included—not just at Christmas but throughout the year.
