It was an egg-stra wonderful day at the children’s Easter party, taking place at the Hospice in Pembury on 11th April. There were nine families supported by the children’s team at the event, and with the sun shining, a variety of activities on offer and seasonal refreshments under the pergola, the day proved to be a magical celebration for all.
The event was expertly planned by the children’s team to include fully accessible activities, including an Easter egg hunt through the garden, biscuit decorating, a craft table, fun temporary tattoos, interactive music, sensory toys and a magic carpet, as well as a highly anticipated visit from the Easter bunny. The children also enjoyed a wide range of chocolate eggs, kindly donated by Debbie’s Villas.
Emma, whose daughter, Ophelia, receives support from the team, said: “It’s been really great, the music therapist has been here, and Ophelia really enjoyed the music. It’s lovely decorated as well with all the bunting and the eggs hanging up on the ceiling. All the staff have been so caring and it’s all fully accessible, just perfectly set up for all our young people with special needs.”
“We’ve had the most amazing day here at Hospice in the Weald. All the needs of the young people have been catered for, so we couldn’t really ask for more, including the sunshine!” – Sharon, mum of 17-year-old Fenton
The biggest hit of all was meeting Naomi, from Animalia Encounters, and all her animals, which included a corn snake, bearded dragon, leopard gecko, tree frog, rabbits, skinny pig, guinea pigs and a tortoise. Naomi was incredibly knowledgeable and patient with the children, bringing smiles and joy as they interacted with the animals and even saw the snake shed its skin.
Of the support received from the children’s team, Nick, Kit’s dad, who also attended the party, said: “We get fantastic support from the community teams and in house, we’ve come to loads of events since the time that we’ve known them. They are an absolute asset to the organisation. I can’t describe how good of a support system they are for us. They’re so relaxed and go with the flow which is the best thing ever and they’re all absolutely lovely people.”
Tracy, Head of Service for Children and Young People, concluded: “What a wonderful day was had by all the families and staff. Such joy seeing everyone interacting with the animals, as well as having fun at the impromptu concert given on the piano by one of the family members. The children’s service looks forward to its next event in the summer holidays. Watch this space for further details…”
